RUSSIAN THREATS

On the last day of December 1999 Boris Yeltsin surprised the world by resigning from the Presidency of Russia.  This took most by surprise and opened up the office to his successor Vladimir Putin the then Prime Minister.

Vladimir Putin a former KGB officer is considered by some to be the most popular politician in Russia.  Speculation is that his rule will be like two recent dictators Pinochet in Chile and Deng in China.  Putin is considered tough by some and ruthless by others, he on January 3, 2000 dismissed Boris Yeltsin's daughter Tatyana Dyachenko which the public welcomed.

The future of the Putin Regime will be tied closely to the Chechnyan War.  If the Russians suffer reversals in Chechnya then Russian public opinion could quickly turn against Putin. Recent reports indicate the Russians are under reporting casualties in Chechnya and even some are alleging that the earlier bombing of the apartments in Russia were committed by russian intelligence agencies as a reason to attack Chechnya.

There remains further intrigue in Russia the land of Chess players.
